This unique "carbide tipped" tool is used for cutting the reed blank to length (usually 54-56mm).  If you cant afford the much more expensive reed "guillotines" offered by Rieger , Reeds'nStuff, and others, then these will easily do the trick for you.  Some very famous players, such as George Sakakeeny, previously at the OBERLIN Conservatory, and now the EASTMAN School of Music , use such end nippers exclusively.
Unlike any bassoon end nippers on the market, these have a dual tungsten carbide cutting tip.
Carbide is an incredibly hard type of steel used in machining.  Carbide is in fact so hard that it is used to machine almost all steel products made in the world today. It is the hardest form of steel on the planet.  Carbide is also commonly used in chain saws and the more expensive circular saw blades. It has many other uses as well when long life, rugged applications, and superior cutting abilities are required.
Also-some of the less expensive nippers being sold on the internet, and by other big-name suppliers, are made from inferior metals or just basic carbon steel and while initially functional at some levels, will very quickly have extremely very poor cutting ability & short lifespans (getting dull right away!).
