    Description

    Measuring about 78" x 40" - but cut into three separate sections of 26" x 40" each -
this blueback nautical chart is titled "The Northeastern Coast of North America from New York to Cape Canso, Including Sable Island" by Edmund Blunt, Hydrographer. It is dated 1828 (but with "additions to 1847") and published in New York by E. & G. W. Blunt. All three sections are shown in the first picture, then they get several pictures each, running east to west, in the following order:
    1) The easternmost of the three charts shows the Nova Scotia coastline along the top, from about Halifax to Canso Harbor, with Sable Island offshore to the right. The title plate for the entire chart is at the lower left, and the inset at the lower right is "Halifax Harbour and Adjacent Coast by J. F. W. Des Barres."
    2) The middle chart shows the Bay of Fundy at the top, with the western end of Nova Scotia on the right and the mainland coastline running south from St. John's, New Brunswick, down to Waldoboro, Maine. The bottom half shows the Georges Bank, but is otherwise all open ocean.
    3) And the westernmost chart shows the remainder of the New England coastline through Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut, ending in New York City and a sliver of the New Jersey coastline at the lower left. This includes Portland, Portsmouth, Boston, Cape Cod, Providence and New York City, as well as the islands of Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard and Long Island. The inset at the upper left is of "Buzzards Bay, drawn from the survey of Des Barres and information furnished by W. C. Taber, by Edward Blunt." The inset at the upper right is of "Cape Cod Harbor by Major J. D. Graham, USTE." And the inset center left is "Boston Harbour from the Survey of A. S. Wadsworth, Esq., USN, and the chart of Des Barres."
On the back of the last section of the chart is the boldly handwritten title "From New York to Cape Canso" and the equally bold ownership inscription "A. J. Ross, Searsport, Maine." According to various online sources, Captain Andrew Jackson Ross (1815-1873) sailed the schooners Patriot, Vandalia and Cassius in the 1830's, and later the brigs Cocheco and Montague, and the ship Premier I, before transitioning into a shipbuilding career in Belfast, Maine. He and his wife, Martha Jane Fowler (1817-1901), are part of the family lineage of the historic True-Fowler-Ross house, which is now open to the public as part of the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport. Their son, Andrew McGilvery Ross (1851-1832), was also a ship's captain.
All three sections of the chart are in used and worn condition, with the blue backing largely separated from the maps, and multiple vertical creases from being pressed while rolled. There are also some tears, chips and cracks in the paper, and some spots of paper loss where the blue back is showing through, as well as a considerable amount of edge wear, especially along the top and bottom edges. The paper is so brittle around the edges, in fact, that a couple of pieces have already chipped off since I took the pictures. Also there is some general dust and soiling all over, including some areas of dampstaining. Please look closely at the pictures, I've tried to zero in on every inch of it so you can see the problem areas. To offset the effect of the already existing crease lines, I will try to roll them together in the opposite direction and ship them in a loose fitting tube. The length of the tube will still incur a size surcharge, however, so I apologize in advance if the shipping cost is high. Please choose whichever shipping option you find best for your zip code.
    International Buyers –
    Please Note:
Import duties, taxes, and charges are
    not included
in the item price or shipping cost. These charges are the buyer's responsibility. Please check with your country's customs office to determine what these additional costs will be prior to bidding or buying. Customs fees are normally charged by the shipping company or collected when you pick the item up. These fees are not additional shipping charges. We won't under-value merchandise or mark the item as a gift on customs forms. Doing that is against U.S. and international laws.
COMBINED SHIPPING: See our seller list for other interesting and unusual items, in fact bid on several and you might save on shipping and handling. If you buy multiple items, and if it's feasible and cost-effective for us to ship the items together, we will gladly consider requests to combine shipping at a reduced cost. Just e-mail us, and we can provide combined shipping cost estimates on a case-by-case basis. Depending on weight and other considerations, we typically offer full shipping rate for the first item, then 50 cents or .00 per item.
And if you are purchasing multiple items, please make the payment as a single payment, rather than trying to pay for each item separately.
Oh, and this may sound obvious, but we can't reduce the shipping charges for items on which we offer free shipping.
    PAYPAL:
Please note that, due to Paypal's ridiculously over-protective "Confirmed Address" policy, we no longer honor requests for shipment to third party addresses, and we reserve the right to refuse to ship to unconfirmed addresses, especially overseas. If you have any questions about this, please contact us prior to bidding so we can review your options. If you have any complaints about this, please contact Paypal.
INTERNATIONAL SHIPPING COSTS: If the eBay auto-calculator is not responding, or if you think our shipping costs are too high, please contact us prior to bidding to determine your shipping options and costs. Repeat,
    prior to bidding
    , please.
FEEDBACK: Because of abuses we've experienced in the past, we have totally given up on the eBay feedback system, so we neither give nor expect feedback. Please, therefore, do not contact us after the auction asking us to leave feedback. If you ever have a problem with an item you purchase from us, please contact us directly about it before giving negative feedback or seller ratings, and especially before invoking eBay's dreaded Grand Tribunal in processes like "Return Requests" or "Opening an Item Not as Described Case." No one is perfect, and we occasionally mis-describe something, or an item arrives late or gets damaged in the mail, but we are always quick to respond to a problem and set it straight in the most mutually agreeable way.
